I'd like to go on a true cross-country flight

No Comments 07 September 2010

I've recently come to the realization that I would like to make an epic flight. I was reading this article on AvWeb and it hit me how inspiring I found the idea of setting off across the country in an old and slow plane.  I really envy this guy. It's probably just my lust for some... Read more »

Second Passenger

I had booked the plane for most of the day, so I was reasonably certain we had plenty of time. Unfortunately, when we arrived the weekend dispatcher was gone to lunch. We had to wait for him to get back, but after that everything was good to go. I did my (increasingly) typical orientation, safety briefing and preflight. Everything checked out. This was great. We loaded up and I started the plane, radioed for taxi, did a run-up and taxied into position at Alpha 8 for takeoff. After glossing over the before and after takeoff checklists, I handed the book to my brother and asked if he could hold it for me. I explained that I might need it once we were off the ground so he just needed to keep it handy. I waited for the landing traffic to touchdown and roll out a bit before calling ready for takeoff. After they were clear, we were cleared for takeoff. As we rolled onto the runway, I looked over and asked one last time, "are you ready?" After an affirmative response, I applied full throttle and we were off. As we reached the end of the runway a large bird flew around the front of the plane and behind us. I immediately alerted the tower of this since it could be an issue and we proceeded to fly as filed. Our course was basically runway heading, so there wasn't much maneuvering to be done. Just a nice climb.... Read more »

Night Cross-Country

I was however surprised by the wind they were reporting; it meant I was going to be doing crosswind landings my first time in the dark. I'm not talking a slight wind either, we were indicating 210 and tracking 225; that's a 15° crab angle. Fortunately, I was in tune with the plane and I could feel the crab, so I knew what I needed to do and when. Unfortunately everything seems faster at night, so I was constantly fighting the urge to slow things down.... Read more »

Long Solo Cross Country

On the one leg I wanted to have a GPS backup, I had no GPS. It turns out that what I had interpreted as the GPS having no location data, was actually me having put in the wrong airport identifier. It now thought I was headed to Greene County and that it was K0VG...I turned down the brightness and left it. I would just have to make sure I stayed on course.... Read more »

Solo Cross Country

After that little event, I opted to call Knoxville Approach (it was time anyway) and get started on my descent. They set me up for a base to 23R and I performed what seemed to me to be an exceptional descent and landing. It was a nice smooth descent of about 200 feet per minute that basically stopped when I greased the landing.... Read more »

Second Cross-country Flight

No Comments 14 September 2009

After we crossed the Cumberlands, the sky was clear. It is very interesting to go from dodging clouds to a completely clear sky in a matter of seconds. Not long after crossing the mountains, we had the field in sight. The wind was negligible and was reported as variable, which led us to select runway 6. It would make for an easy landing and a quick turn around, but on listening to the CTAF, we discovered that there was traffic in the area and they intended to use 24. We elected to follow suit and entered on the 45 for a left downwind for 24.... Read more »

The other end of the airport is surrounded by ridiculously huge houses. One of which is on a hill straight in line with the runway. It is crazy.... Read more »

About the author

Hello, my name is Matt Everett and as of 1/1/2010 I am a private pilot ASEL. I started this blog early in my training and used it primarily as a place to keep notes of my lessons. Since then it has grown to much more than that, but my main focus is still on aviation experiences. It is my sincerest hope that this blog is a resource for others as much as it is a resource for me.
