Attitude is Everything

2 Comments 10 May 2010

A few months ago, I saw a link on twitter to the following video: I recently remembered this and thought I might post it here and offer some analysis of the overall situation.  The biggest talking point I've come up with is "Attitude is everything."  I mean that in two ways: attitude of the pilot... Aviation In Schools Foundation

2 Comments 06 May 2010

So recently I've been kicking around an idea.  It isn't particularly innovative since all the pieces exist in other programs, but I want to combine them into one big thing.  It is something I'm passionate about, and I want to find a way to make it work. The basic idea is based on the fact... Read more »

Private Pilot! (Part 2)

No Comments 01 January 2010

After landing, he asked me to stop by the FBO so he could grab some coffee "and then we'll get to the paperwork." The scary thing about the examiner, and the hardest part about the exam, is that he is impossible to read. You never know what is going through his mind or what is coming next. So I drop him off at the FBO completely unaware of whether I've passed or failed. If we go by my self - assessment I'm sure I've failed at this point, but there is nothing else to do but secure the plane and wait for the paperwork. So I taxi over, shut down, and secure the plane. As I am finishing the last tiedown, which is always the tail for me, the examiner comes up behind me and says, "Well, congratulations." I'm thinking..."Congratulations, you failed, but we didn't die here's a pink slip."... Read more »

Stall practice

No Comments 23 December 2009

I am mostly ready for my check-ride. I was 1 hour short or 40 and I need some work on controlling my stall recovery. That was the plan for this lesson. In the last lesson we had done a lot of work on the maneuvers and revisited stalls. This idea behind this flight was to get some more practice with stalls to make sure that the procedure sticks. The last thing I want is to get out and spin it on the check-ride.... Read more »

Long Solo Cross Country

No Comments 26 October 2009

On the one leg I wanted to have a GPS backup, I had no GPS. It turns out that what I had interpreted as the GPS having no location data, was actually me having put in the wrong airport identifier. It now thought I was headed to Greene County and that it was K0VG...I turned down the brightness and left it. I would just have to make sure I stayed on course.... Read more »

Solo Cross Country

1 Comment 19 October 2009

After that little event, I opted to call Knoxville Approach (it was time anyway) and get started on my descent. They set me up for a base to 23R and I performed what seemed to me to be an exceptional descent and landing. It was a nice smooth descent of about 200 feet per minute that basically stopped when I greased the landing.... Read more »

Tenth Lesson – SOLO!!!

No Comments 27 July 2009

Once back on the ground, I thought I might have a little bit of a wait to cross 23L. I was surprised to hear them hold the Learjet and even more surprised when he explained why. Apparently there was some poor guy lost out off the departure end of the airfield, just flying around.... Read more »

Ninth Lesson

No Comments 20 July 2009

if things are ever completely normal, I am afraid I won't be able to cope. Every lesson since I started handling the radios something has been "abnormal." Never anything big, but not standard procedures. I don't think I've ever actually radioed ground control and I've done everything from extending downwind to a 360 between base and final. That said, it is good practice for abnormalities.... Read more »

In all I made 8 takeoffs and landings. Only about 3 of them were decent, but I am learning the tricks. I think I will do much better next time.... Read more »

About Me

Hello, my name is Matt Everett and as of 1/1/2010 I am a private pilot ASEL. I started this blog early in my training and used it primarily as a place to keep notes of my lessons. Since then it has grown to much more than that, but my main focus is still on aviation experiences.
