Dad's First Flight

4 Comments 17 May 2010

My parents recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.  They aren't big on gifts and things.  Well, long story short, Mom got a new convertible this year that she's calling a gift and she wanted to do something special for Dad.  What could be more special than a first flight?  How about your son being the... Second Passenger

No Comments 07 March 2010

I had booked the plane for most of the day, so I was reasonably certain we had plenty of time. Unfortunately, when we arrived the weekend dispatcher was gone to lunch. We had to wait for him to get back, but after that everything was good to go. I did my (increasingly) typical orientation, safety briefing and preflight. Everything checked out. This was great. We loaded up and I started the plane, radioed for taxi, did a run-up and taxied into position at Alpha 8 for takeoff. After glossing over the before and after takeoff checklists, I handed the book to my brother and asked if he could hold it for me. I explained that I might need it once we were off the ground so he just needed to keep it handy. I waited for the landing traffic to touchdown and roll out a bit before calling ready for takeoff. After they were clear, we were cleared for takeoff. As we rolled onto the runway, I looked over and asked one last time, "are you ready?" After an affirmative response, I applied full throttle and we were off. As we reached the end of the runway a large bird flew around the front of the plane and behind us. I immediately alerted the tower of this since it could be an issue and we proceeded to fly as filed. Our course was basically runway heading, so there wasn't much maneuvering to be done. Just a nice climb.... Read more »

Just flying

4 Comments 14 February 2010

I don't know how it happened. Somehow, a month has gone by since I've flown. When I realized this, I immediately scheduled the plane for a few hours. I don't want to let time get away from me. I figured I would do some maneuvers and some landings. Nothing very exciting, but I am absolutely dead set against not flying for long stretches of time. I don't want to be the guy that goes up every two years for a BFR or worse, lets his medical lapse and just doesn't fly. I understand things happen, but I'm just not built for that. Anymore, if I spend too much time on the ground I get stressed out.... Read more »

Oral Test Prep

No Comments 14 December 2009

While the test is fairly regimented and unsurprising, the oral exam is less structured than the practical exam. There are the standard parts, legal questions and cross country planning, and there are the questions that the examiner chooses to focus on. This lesson is about those questions specifically.... Night Cross-Country

No Comments 01 December 2009

I was however surprised by the wind they were reporting; it meant I was going to be doing crosswind landings my first time in the dark. I'm not talking a slight wind either, we were indicating 210 and tracking 225; that's a 15° crab angle. Fortunately, I was in tune with the plane and I could feel the crab, so I knew what I needed to do and when. Unfortunately everything seems faster at night, so I was constantly fighting the urge to slow things down.... Read more »

Long Solo Cross Country

No Comments 26 October 2009

On the one leg I wanted to have a GPS backup, I had no GPS. It turns out that what I had interpreted as the GPS having no location data, was actually me having put in the wrong airport identifier. It now thought I was headed to Greene County and that it was K0VG...I turned down the brightness and left it. I would just have to make sure I stayed on course.... Read more »

About the author

Hello, my name is Matt Everett and as of 1/1/2010 I am a private pilot ASEL. I started this blog early in my training and used it primarily as a place to keep notes of my lessons. Since then it has grown to much more than that, but my main focus is still on aviation experiences. It is my sincerest hope that this blog is a resource for others as much as it is a resource for me.
