A look at the traffic pattern

No Comments 12 April 2010

I primarily fly out of TYS, a class c towered field, so my traffic patterns are driven primarily by the tower. Sometimes however, they have an empty pattern and it is up to me to fly appropriately. I would also like to point out that my flight instructor has never worn "the pilot shirt," so his teaching was pretty in line with this video. I guess I got lucky.... Read more »

Scary Traffic Pattern Work

No Comments 02 October 2009

This time however, when I was cleared for the option, there was a fair amount of turbulence. The plane was really rocking. Then, right at the tail end of the downwind leg, a gigantic gust of wind hit the plane and I immediately noticed a significant drop in altitude (maybe a hundred feet). To make a long story short, I hit my head twice on the ceiling. Just after the second gust, the controller called to let me know that the wind was now gusting at 27 knots and I responded the only way I knew how, "Roger that..I'd like to make this one a full stop." They gave me a runway change and I put it down and taxied to the tie down.... Read more »

Eleventh Lesson – More solo traffic pattern

No Comments 19 August 2009

Of the three I would say that the middle one was the best. It seems that landing is like when I make pancakes, the first one isn't so good but the rest are edible. My own assessment is that I am failing to grasp the intensity of control inputs required.... Read more »

Tenth Lesson – SOLO!!!

No Comments 27 July 2009

Once back on the ground, I thought I might have a little bit of a wait to cross 23L. I was surprised to hear them hold the Learjet and even more surprised when he explained why. Apparently there was some poor guy lost out off the departure end of the airfield, just flying around.... Read more »

Ninth Lesson

No Comments 20 July 2009

if things are ever completely normal, I am afraid I won't be able to cope. Every lesson since I started handling the radios something has been "abnormal." Never anything big, but not standard procedures. I don't think I've ever actually radioed ground control and I've done everything from extending downwind to a 360 between base and final. That said, it is good practice for abnormalities.... Read more »

Eighth Lesson

On the final landing, the crosswind was gone and consequently I made another really nice landing. It wasn't the picture perfect landing from last time but it was still grade A.... Read more »

About the author

Hello, my name is Matt Everett and as of 1/1/2010 I am a private pilot ASEL. I started this blog early in my training and used it primarily as a place to keep notes of my lessons. Since then it has grown to much more than that, but my main focus is still on aviation experiences. It is my sincerest hope that this blog is a resource for others as much as it is a resource for me.
