If bush flying is your thing, I’ve discovered a little known movie from Canada that may interest you. I found it on Netflix in the streaming selections (believe it or not). The film, called the Snow Walker, features Barry Pepper as a bush pilot based in Yellow Knife in the early 50s. While it isn’t strictly a flying movie, since the plane crashes early in the film, there are lots of great flying scenes including several that involve the venerable Noorduyn Norseman.

While the movie deals with the interaction, or lack thereof, between the primarily white inhabitants and bush pilots and the indigenous tribes, it also highlights an important aspect of bush flying, that is to say, be prepared. Unfortunately, the main character opts to deviate from the plan and becomes hopelessly lost and essentially beyond rescue because the other pilots do not know where to search at that point, finding him was solely based on luck. The moral of the story for pilots is, I suppose, plan the flight and fly the plan.

Anyway, if you’ve got Netflix it’s still on streaming, otherwise you can pick it up from Amazon. By the way, picking it up from Amazon via that link will help me make a little income for the blog and I’ll be eternally grateful.
