If you’re looking for a destination for your weekend flight, I recommend you check out the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The facility is part of the Smithshonian’s National Air and Space Museum (probably the best part for plane geeks) and will play host to the annual ‘Become a Pilot’ day tomorrow, June 18th. Unlike the main museum, the Udvar-Hazy Center is in Chantilly, Va., on the grounds of Washington Dulles International Airport. For directions, the address is 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway Chantilly, VA 20151.
The National Air and Space Museum hosts the ‘Become and Pilot’ event every year, and the 2011 event looks like it should be a lot of fun. There are 50 airplanes of all types scheduled for static display outside the Boeing Aviation Hanger at the Center. Owners/pilots will be on hand to answer any questions and talk about their aircraft. Even though I’m listing this as a flying destination, there is a waiting list to fly directly into the event (i.e. those 50 slots are currently full.) via Dulles International Airport (KIAD) where the aircraft are taxied into position for the event. The event lasts from 10:00 am until 5:30 pm and is free, but parking is $15 bucks. For more information check out the event page.
If you are interested in flying, Leesburg (KJYO) is only 9NM away. I know it’s in the SFRA, but if you aren’t scared of the area or you want to try something new, it’s worth checking out. You’ll need to take the online course and your flight will involve a lot of planning, but I guarantee it will be interesting. Note: I’ve only ever flown a minivan in the area, so I’m not an expert in navigating the airspace around Washington, D.C.
In other news, I’m getting ready for my pilgrimage to Oshkosh. They extended the discounted tickets through the end of June, so be sure to pick them up if you want. Also, the presentations and forum schedule has been released. It’s only about 70% complete they say, but it’s never too early to start planning your days.
Anyway, today’s is a short post. Get out there and fly this weekend!
