In case you didn’t know the general aviation event of the year is going on right now in Wisconsin. I and my father will be driving up on Wednesday for the last half of the week. In talking this over with my wife, she asked why I would even want to go. She couldn’t comprehend why I would drive 12 hours to a muddy field in Wisconsin for a long weekend. So to offer some idea as to my motivation, here are my top ten reasons for going to Oshkosh.
- 800,000 people and 12,000 aircraft descend on Oshkosh’s Wittman Regional Airport for the week (or longer)
- There are aircraft in attendance from nearly every facet of aviation: from P-51s or fifty year-old homebuilts to giant airliners.
- There are over 800 exhibitors from aviation related ventures that will be announcing and releasing exciting products, aircraft, and media
- Bob Hoover in the Vintage Wings of Canada F-86
- Daily air-shows and a night show featuring Matt Younkin in the Twin Beech
- 75th anniversaries of the B-17 and DC-3
- Sean D. Tucker
- The incredible number of forums and workshops on topics such as grass field how-tos, Cessna 140s, and terrain flying. If you can’t find something about a particular topic, it probably isn’t being done.
- The photo and video opportunities
- The interactions with similarly motivated people
There are so many more reasons to go. Additionally, I would love to have gone for the entire week and camped under the wing of my very own airplane. Maybe that will happen next year. Maybe I will find that plane while I’m at Oshkosh this year. The bottom line is that I will be going to Oshkosh this year.
