In case you didn’t know the general aviation event of the year is going on right now in Wisconsin.  I and my father will be driving up on Wednesday for the last half of the week.  In talking this over with my wife, she asked why I would even want to go.  She couldn’t comprehend why I would drive 12 hours to a muddy field in Wisconsin for a long weekend.  So to offer some idea as to my motivation, here are my top ten reasons for going to Oshkosh.

  1. 800,000 people and 12,000 aircraft descend on Oshkosh’s Wittman Regional Airport for the week (or longer)
  2. There are aircraft in attendance from nearly every facet of aviation: from P-51s or fifty year-old homebuilts to giant airliners.
  3. There are over 800 exhibitors from aviation related ventures that will be announcing and releasing exciting products, aircraft, and media
  4. Bob Hoover in the Vintage Wings of Canada F-86
  5. Daily air-shows and a night show featuring Matt Younkin in the Twin Beech
  6. 75th anniversaries of the B-17 and DC-3
  7. Sean D. Tucker
  8. The incredible number of forums and workshops on topics such as grass field how-tos, Cessna 140s, and terrain flying.  If you can’t find something about a particular topic, it probably isn’t being done.
  9. The photo and video opportunities
  10. The interactions with similarly motivated people

There are so many more reasons to go.  Additionally, I would love to have gone for the entire week and camped under the wing of my very own airplane.  Maybe that will happen next year.  Maybe I will find that plane while I’m at Oshkosh this year.  The bottom line is that I will be going to Oshkosh this year.
