It’s that time of year. Next week is the aviation event that we all look forward to — Airventure in Oshkosh. I’m trying to get my own little pilgrimage together for the last half of the week. I will be closely following the event all week though. As a matter of public service, I would like to offer a collection of sites and tools which will allow someone to experience Oshkosh at home.
The first stop to make is the Airventure homepage. The page offers a pretty decent account of what is currently going on as well as the schedule of events. Additionally, it is host to the official Airventure NOTAM, which is good reading even if you aren’t able to fly in.
The next place to check is the LiveATC.net feeds. Especially during arrival and departure days. Those days are a flurry of activity and will make for some great listening. Well truthfully, all days are probably pretty good listening.
In a similar vein, EAA Radio is broadcasting live on the web. The page has a live stream as well as instructions for setting up streams in your favorite media players. This is a great way to really bring the Oshkosh experience into your home or office. You can hear the latest news and information from the grounds. It will be almost like being there.
One of the more social ways to experience Airventure from a distance is the Oshkosh365 community. There are forums and other tools available. Additionally, EAA members get even more via the members only areas. I’ve spent quite a bit of time on the community as of late and I would bet I’ll be spending even more time there in the next few days. One of the notable items on Oshkosh365 last year was the Blue Dot Cam. I understand this year there are at least 3 web cams. They are usually posted in a sticky thread in the forums. Additionally, you can view the Pioneer Airport from a user controllable web cam atop the Airventure Museum.
To round out the EAA provided coverage, check out their twitter and facebook coverage. The feeds already have a lot going on, and they are likely to be home to a good deal of activity throughout the week. Check them frequently. Additionally, check the hash-tag #OSH10 for all the great tweets that are sure to be coming out of the Oshkosh grounds.
As for non-EAA coverage, I will offer a few of my favorite places. Avweb will likely offer coverage on their special events page or they will definitely have some coverage in the general feed. As I saw when writing this post, the guys from UCAP are definitely going to be on hand throughout the week. Check their site and forums for more info. I’d be surprised if we didn’t hear anything out of Airspeed, the Pilot Cast, or Pilot’s Flight Podlog. The Pilots of America forums might also bear examination.
Feel free to frequent these resources at any time of the year as well. They are almost all year-round endeavors and happen to be some of my favorite sites. Also feel free to comment with any resources that aren’t listed here.
